Embeddings Without the Mystique
A practical mental model for what vector representations preserve, discard and make searchable.

An embedding converts an object into coordinates so that useful relationships can become geometric operations.
Coordinates are not meaning by themselves
A single dimension rarely corresponds to a clean human concept. Meaning is distributed across the representation.
What matters is the geometry learned by the model.
Similarity
If two representations are near each other under the similarity measure used by the system, the model is claiming that they share information relevant to its training objective.
That last phrase matters: relevant to its training objective.
Representation always discards something
Compression creates usefulness by ignoring detail. A semantic text embedding may preserve topic while losing exact spelling. An image embedding may preserve visual semantics while ignoring tiny text.
The right question is therefore not "is this embedding good?" but "does this representation preserve the distinction my retrieval task needs?"
The engineering consequence
Evaluate embeddings with your own query-document pairs. A benchmark score cannot tell you whether product codes, Japanese retail terms, diagrams or near-duplicate images remain distinguishable in your domain.
